Most of us will experience periods of stress or anxiety at certain times in our lives. This is often a perfectly normal response to adverse life events or distressing experiences.

However if we experience prolonged periods of stress, anxiety or low mood it can cause a wide range of unpleasant physical symptoms including tiredness, fatigue, muscular pain - neck, back and joint pain, insomnia, or bowel symptoms. Sometimes these unpleasant physical symptoms can then become an additional cause for concern, worry or anxiety - creating a vicious cycle.

Stress, anxiety and low mood can make us think more negatively, and impact on our concentration, memory and sleep pattern which can then compound and maintain the whole problem.

Over 30 years of clinical research has shown that CBT can significantly improve outcomes and is one of the most effective psychological treatments for stress, anxiety and depression.

CBT Associates treat individuals with the following conditions:

What does CBT involve?

Individual therapy:

  • You will meet with a CBT specialist for between 6 and 20, weekly, or fortnightly, sessions. Each session will last approximately 50 minutes.
  • During the first and maybe the second session, the CBT specialist will ask certain questions in order to understand the problem which will help to plan the treatment intervention.
  • CBT focuses on the here-and-now but occasionally needs to look at the past to help recognize how past events may impact on how we perceive things in the here and now.
  • Your CBT specialist will agree with you what to address during treatment.
  • You will be actively involved and your CBT specialist will ask you to keep a diary in order to recognize how you react to situations. This involves recording thoughts, images, emotions, behaviours and how the body reacts physically in different circumstances.
  • The treatment will involve reflecting upon your interpretation of situations and developing more helpful patterns of thinking that will have a positive impact upon your mood, behaviour and physical wellbeing.
  • Your CBT specialist is also likely to design behavioural experiments in collaboration with you in order to put some of your thoughts and beliefs to the test.
  • The aim is to teach you how to manage your own mood, behaviour and physical wellbeing. You will be introduced to strategies that you can continue to apply long after your treatment has come to an end.
